Most calls we get start with the same handful of questions, so here they are without the runaround.
What's usually wrong when a door won't open? Nine times out of ten it's a broken torsion spring, a snapped cable, or an opener that's given up on the circuit board. If the door feels heavy when you lift it by hand, that's spring trouble before it's opener trouble.
Can you fix it the same day? Depends on the part. A spring or cable job is usually a same-visit fix once we're on-site. Some opener boards and certain panel styles are special order, and we won't pretend otherwise, if a part has to come from the manufacturer, that's a wait we don't control.
Do you replace whole doors or just repair? Both. If your door is original to a house built decades back, sometimes the honest call is replacement rather than chasing parts for hardware nobody stocks anymore.
Do you work on all brands? We work on standard residential torsion and extension spring systems and most opener brands sold in this market. If you're not sure what you've got, a phone description usually tells us enough to bring the right parts.

That range matters because the housing stock changes as you move through it. Across the area we serve there are roughly 41,085 households and about 20,177 owner-occupied houses, and a lot of that stock, including plenty of it in the 1960s and 70s builds that dominate the older neighborhoods, is still running the original torsion hardware from the era it was built. If your house falls in that build window, that's worth mentioning when you call, since it tells us what kind of spring and drum setup to expect before we even pull in the driveway.
Who Does the Work
The person who answers the phone is generally the same kind of person who shows up with the truck, someone who works on doors, not a call center reading a script. We don't carry a big roster of add-on services; garage doors, openers, springs, cables, tracks, and rollers are the job.
Winters here get genuinely cold, and that matters more than people expect. A torsion spring that's already lost some of its temper from age can let go outright on the coldest mornings, and steel tracks contract enough in hard cold to throw an alignment that was borderline all fall. We see more snapped springs and stuck openers in the cold months than any other time of year, which is just physics doing what physics does to metal.
One honest limit: we don't do commercial rolling steel doors or full structural framing work. If your job is a standard residential door, opener, or the hardware that runs it, that's squarely what we handle.
Why won't my garage door open even though the opener has power?
If the opener light comes on but the door won't move, check for a broken spring first, the door will feel unusually heavy if you disconnect the opener and lift by hand. A snapped cable or a bent track can cause the same symptom. We can usually tell which one it is over the phone once you describe what you're seeing.
How far out from Ypsilanti do you go?
We run from our shop at 265 S Harris Rd out to Willis, Belleville, and Saline within about 9 miles, then further to Milan, Plymouth, and Wayne near 12 miles, and out to Whitmore Lake, Dexter, Northville, and South Lyon around 14-15 miles, with a few stops like Maybee, Carleton, Bridgewater, and Dundee near 17-19 miles.
My house is from the 1960s, is that a problem for parts?
Not usually a dealbreaker, but original hardware from that era often uses spring winding and drum sizes that current stock doesn't match exactly. We carry what fits most of that stock. Occasionally a specific bracket or drum has to be special ordered, and we'll tell you upfront if that's the case rather than guess.
Do you install new doors or only repair existing ones?
Both. Repair is the right call most of the time, but if a door is original to an older house and the track, hinges, and spring system are all wearing out together, replacing the whole unit can cost less over time than repeated part-by-part fixes.
Is there a reason more doors break in winter here?
Cold steel contracts and springs under tension lose some flexibility, so a spring that's already near the end of its life is more likely to snap on a hard-cold morning than in July. Tracks can also shift slightly out of alignment as the metal contracts, which is why winter is our busiest season for spring and alignment calls.
